RollFormConnectPut founders back on product and got the platform ready for what’s next
The Challenge
As RollFormConnect grew, the leadership team faced the same pressures as most startups moving from early traction to scale.
- Founders hands-on with the platform. The founders were personally handling security, backups, infrastructure and customer support. Every hour spent keeping the platform running was taken from the product roadmap and from the manufacturers they were working to win and keep.
- Preparing for investor due diligence.Fundraising was on the horizon. Investors would examine the codebase, architecture, security posture and documentation, and the team wanted to be thoroughly prepared.
- Growth arriving faster than the platform was built for.New customers, more machines and growing volumes of real-time production data were putting load on a platform designed for a much smaller footprint.
- A fast-built product that now has to be production-ready.Speed, and the use of AI-assisted development, had helped get the product to market. Testing, consistency and maintainability now needed to catch up, and a full in-house technical team was not practical at this stage.
- Inherited code that needed to be mapped and documented.Much of the early codebase had been written by an outside agency and early contractors who were no longer involved. Documentation was limited, and each change needed care to avoid unintended effects elsewhere.
The Solution
Rather than hiring a full in-house team, RollFormConnect engaged ToolTwist as a flexible, fractional technical team that takes ownership of the platform so the founders can focus on the business.
- Managed platform operations.ToolTwist took over day-to-day responsibility for keeping the platform secure, backed up and running, including monitoring, security maintenance, backup and recovery routines, and first-line technical support.
- Due diligence readiness.ToolTwist reviewed the codebase and architecture with an investor’s eye, identified and prioritised risks early, and documented architecture, infrastructure and processes.
- Scalability assessment and hardening. The platform was assessed against expected growth, including performance, data handling in Firestore and the real-time dashboards customers rely on. Bottlenecks were addressed.
- Production hardening of AI-assisted code.Developers and testers reviewed, refactored and tested the code from the fast build phase, bringing it up to production standards, backed by structured quality assurance.
- Codebase takeover and knowledge transfer.ToolTwist mapped the inherited code, documented key modules and data flows, and added automated tests around critical areas, so changes can be made deliberately and verified.
- A technical team sized for a startup.Development, QA and operations expertise as and when it is needed, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house team, scaled up or down as the business evolves.
ToolTwist’s Role
ToolTwist acts as RollFormConnect’s extended technical team, providing development, quality assurance and platform operations so the business can grow without carrying the cost of a full in-house team.
- Front-end development.Front-end dashboards, data visualisations and reporting tools on a modern web stack, integrated with Firestore.
- Testing and quality assurance.Testers ensure the reliability and quality of the application, including the code from the AI-assisted build phase, so it meets production standards.
- Codebase takeover and documentation.ToolTwist took over the code inherited from earlier contractors, documenting how it works and adding test coverage so future changes are safe and predictable.
- Platform operations and support.Security maintenance, backups, monitoring and technical support, freeing the founders to focus on the product and their customers.
- Scalability and due diligence readiness.ToolTwist assesses and strengthens the platform for growth and prepares the documentation and technical groundwork for investor due diligence.
Impact
- Founders refocused on product and customers. With security, backups and support handled by ToolTwist, the founders have reclaimed their time for the roadmap, customers and growing the business.
- Confidence going into due diligence. The codebase, architecture and processes have been reviewed and documented, so the team can approach investor scrutiny knowing what is under the hood.
- A platform ready to grow.Scalability risks have been identified and addressed, giving a clear view of how the platform will perform as more customers, machines and data come on board.
- Production-ready without a full in-house team. What started as a fast, AI-assisted build is now a tested, maintainable product, delivered at a cost that fits a startup’s budget.
- Changes with confidence. The inherited codebase is understood, documented and covered by tests, so the team can ship improvements with confidence.
- Continued results for customers. With a stable platform underneath it, Intelligent Scheduling continues to deliver for manufacturers. Clients report an average efficiency increase of 30%, machine downtime reduced by as much as 45%, and in some cases a doubling of production throughput.
