Commbank Property Guide app goes live

The Commbank Property Guide iPhone app is officially live. This launch represents a massive, multi-team collaborative effort between TwistResources, RPData, and the talented crew over at Vivant Pty Ltd. We are incredibly proud to see this hit the App Store.

The Mobile Data Challenge

Building a heavy-hitting property app for the iPhone sounds great on paper, but anyone who develops for mobile knows the reality: networks can be notoriously unreliable.

You have users walking down the street, dropping in and out of 3G or Edge networks, trying to pull massive amounts of real estate data on the fly. If the mobile app has to wait for a traditional, clunky enterprise server to process a heavy data response, the app is going to lag, timeout, and ultimately frustrate the user.

Bridging the Gap with ToolTwist

That is exactly where ToolTwist stepped in. Our role in this collaboration was to architect and provide the high-speed caching backend. Essentially, our technology sits right in the middle, acting as the high-speed bridge between the sleek mobile front-end built by Vivant and the massive, heavy-duty property data servers hosted by RPData.

This project was particularly interesting for our engineering team because it served as a perfect real-world showcase for ToolTwist's XPC and XData functionality.

Here is how we solved the bottleneck:

  • Taming Legacy Systems: We used ToolTwist to seamlessly integrate with RPData's existing legacy SOAP web services.
  • Distilling the Payload: Instead of trying to force those heavy XML payloads down to a mobile device, our backend intercepted, converted, and buffered the data.
  • Delivering Speed: We then exposed all of that rich property data as a clean, lightweight JSON API specifically tailored for the mobile front-end.

Built for the Real World

By distilling complex enterprise data into a heavily optimized format, the Commbank Property Guide remains incredibly snappy and responsive, even when a user is stuck on a slow or intermittent mobile network. It is a textbook example of how the right backend architecture can make or break a mobile user experience.
