TrackMotion goes live
The TrackMotion iPhone app is live on the Apple iTunes Store. This is a serious app: it provides metrological analysis of vehicle motion, and is used by motorcycle racers, riding schools, and driver-training schools to understand the motion of their vehicle.

How it works
Accelerometers, gyros, and other sensors in the iPhone record the motion, location, and frequencies of a vehicle. That data is uploaded to the TrackMotion server, where it's processed by a variety of algorithms. A web interface then lets you analyse and compare sessions by overlaying one ride on top of other vehicles, drivers, and riders.
By allowing direct comparison of handling characteristics, TrackMotion gives immediate insight into how changes in a motorcycle configuration affect its performance. Similarly, it makes it easy to see how different riding or driving styles affect the behaviour of a vehicle.
With more than a thousand samples a second being recorded and analysed, TrackMotion notices movements of the vehicle that are unnoticeable to the rider or driver, and to traditional metrology equipment.
Years later we revisited this problem from a very different angle, using AI to replicate a PhD-level motion-analysis project. See motorcycle motion analytics →
